PrintSURGERY

Surgery is a medical specialty that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition such as disease or injury, to help improve bodily function or appearance, or sometimes for some other reason.

Surgery procedures are also used in animal experimentation in a wide range of applications: stereotaxy (lesion of a targeted neurotransmitter systems, injection of drug or tracers in specific brain structures…), reproduction of human procedures in animal for elucidating the mechanisms of acute pain or screening new treatments for the management of pain, .study of physiological parameters in vivo without the influence of animal behavior or for avoiding the animal experiencing pain (non-invasive blood pressure measurements, electrophysiology), catheterization procedure (self-administration), electrodes positioning (self-stimulation), sensors installation (telemetry, invasive blood pressure evaluation), etc…

Surgical procedure in experimentation are required to follows the recommendations of the Guidelines for Ethical Conduct in the Care and Use of Animals defined by the ethical committees insuring the use of aseptic techniques and instruments and appropriate anesthesia. In this context, specific materials has been developed for small laboratory animals for ensuring a control of anesthesia level, body temperature, cardiovascular and respiratory functions and then providing optimal...
