SURGERY
Surgery is a medical specialty that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition such as disease or injury, to help improve bodily function or appearance, or sometimes for some other reason.
Surgery procedures are also used in animal experimentation in a wide range of applications: stereotaxy (lesion of a targeted neurotransmitter systems, injection of drug or tracers in specific brain structures…), reproduction of human procedures in animal for elucidating the mechanisms of acute pain or screening new treatments for the management of pain, .study of physiological parameters in vivo without the influence of animal behavior or for avoiding the animal experiencing pain (non-invasive blood pressure measurements, electrophysiology), catheterization procedure (self-administration), electrodes positioning (self-stimulation), sensors installation (telemetry, invasive blood pressure evaluation), etc…
Surgical procedure in experimentation are required to follows the recommendations of the Guidelines for Ethical Conduct in the Care and Use of Animals defined by the ethical committees insuring the use of aseptic techniques and instruments and appropriate anesthesia. In this context, specific materials has been developed for small laboratory animals for ensuring a control of anesthesia level, body temperature, cardiovascular and respiratory functions and then providing optimal... EXPERIMENTAL TESTS
Anesthesia induction
Anesthesia induction is the first step of the anesthesia process when general anesthesia is required in the experiment procedure (pain models, electrophysiology, lesions, stereotaxy etc…). A transparent anaesthetizing box is classically used in this process as it provides less stressful conditions for initiating anesthesia and allows a constant observation of the animal for avoiding any accidental overdosing. Anesthesia induction makes easier positioning the animal on the surgery table and connecting it to the nose cone associated with the system providing the level of gas mixture necessary for the maintenance of anesthesia conditions.
- Avoid unnecessary stress during the anesthesia procedure
- Needs very simple and inexpensive equipment
Surgery animal positioning
Surgery tables are classically used for completing general surgical work on small laboratory animals. The surgery tables allow the anesthetized animal to be held firmly in place and then facilitate the surgery procedure. Some of them are homoeothermic for ensuring the control of animal body temperature along the surgery.
- Facilitates surgery procedure
Body temperature control
Animal body temperature is a key factor to control in a wide variety of pharmacological and behavioral experiments: surgery, evaluation of pain sensitivity to thermal stimuli, evaluation of blood pressure using the non-invasive method, etc… Homeothermic blanket are classically used during surgical procedure. These systems are coupled with a rectal temperature-sensing probe increasing or decreasing the temperature of the blanket depending of the variations of the animal body temperature. Warming chambers are also specifically used in some procedure such as non-invasive blood pressure for ensuring a homogeneous global warmed space around the animal body.
- Precise control of body temperature
- Surgery
- Non-invasive blood pressure in rodents
