Description
Open-field experiment allows the evaluation of animal’s basal activity and its evolution along the time, in response to novelty or anxiogenic environment, and in response to pharmacological treatment, lesion or genetic modification.
Basal locomotor activity is generally assessed in a specific activity arena (can be an open-field or others) for short-time/intermittent periods (<1h). Locomotion (horizontal activity), exploration (rearing and objects sniffing) and stereotypies (movements without displacement) are then recorded manually or using various automated procedures (photocell beams, video-tracking system, weight transducers…).

This option provides the data related with the animal track as well as the possibility to record the image of the experiment. The SMARTSUPER package of the SMART video-tracking software contains the SMARTCS customizable experimental module allowing the user to carry out open-field experiments as well as any other user-defined experiment (water maze, plus maze etc…).
The SMARTOF module is an additional straightforward and time-saving option providing standard zone definition and already predefined report directly related to open-fields experiments.
The SMARTSUPER package of the SMART video-tracking software also contains the SMARTMA and SMARTTW extensions for tracking several subjects at the same time (each one in its own arena) and for the automated detection of animal vertical activity (rearing). With the SMARTTW module specific experimental conditions are needed for obtaining reliable data (ask for more details).
The SMART video-tracking can also be used with user’s own open-field box and other capacities are available (ask for more details).
